Unfortunately, these moments of brilliance weren’t enough to save the novel for me. Lanark’s escape will take him into another circle of hell where he’ll hear the story of a life that was once his and where the life he now lives will change forever. An experience Lanark most definitely is.

I was trying to figure out how I could avoid being what, when and where this was. A unique and surreal read, the range of stylistic devices and tones used added interesting layers to the work and often revel the hand of the writer.

I wasn’t ready for it the first time! A more narcissistic, misogynistic and antisocial character I’ve seldom met, and I found it hard to keep reading about him. These days, Scottish confidence – a regained parliament of sorts, a more admissible literary, musical and artistic culture – is in notionally better shape, and that partly in direct response to this book.

I’m feeling hugely ambivalent about this book. It’s a modern masterpiece that spans three worlds in four books, and tells the connected stories of Duncan Thaw – a student at Glasgow’s Art School in the s – and Lanark – a man who wakes to find himself in an unspecified period in the strange yet familiar place, Unthank. Which is strange, because it seems to think that drawing attention to the novel as novel is a really neat and innovative trick, which by it totally isn’t.
