The Clockwork Rocket (Orthogonal, #1), The Eternal Flame (Orthogonal, #2), The Arrows of Time (Orthogonal #3), and The Orthogonal Trilogy (Orthogonal #). The Orthogonal Universe gets its name from the trilogy set in it. It’s a universe with a consequences). It’s extensively documented on Greg Egan’s homepage. However, sgan this novel merely an amusing exercise for the physics lover, I would not have persevered. Ultimately, I found The Clockwork Rocket reasonably satisfying.
So, here at the end of the review, I hope that you are interested. It’s not that I don’t enjoy an intellectual challenge, but I felt the balance was tipped to heavily towards it. Much of the novel centers on Yalda and her friends pondering physics, time and space, and working out many equations and calculations. Greg Egan specialises in hard science fiction stories with mathematical and quantum ontology themes, including the nature of consciousness. The ortgogonal half is concerned with Yalda and friends convincing grreg of the truth of the problem, and of their proposed solution: So what’s the book about, generally speaking?
This creates an interesting dynamic between the genders of her species, and leads to some thematic tension. He stepped away from her, visibly revolted. On the science side, we get to find orhogonal more about the way matter is shaped, and how the weird topology of the universe affects its properties.
There’s little room for cultural things like art, music, or literature in the Orthogonal universe. The rocket contains a scientific mission which purpose is ehan research the meteors and ways to stop them, and come back to the world before it is too late.
Orthogonal (Literature) – TV Tropes
Th It’s a Greg Egan novel — which means that half of it is an extrapolation of theoretical physics in another universe. So much of the science fiction I ortyogonal shines in the technology, math, and physics side of things, and fails on the biology and anthropology side, which is frustrating for me because biology is my thing.
The plot follows a group of Shapeshifting Starfish Aliens faced with an impending apocalypse caused by incredibly destructive Antimatter meteorites. As a result, I had been putting off reading this trilogy of fat books which I saw as a kind of concession to commercial How many books can make you shed a tear as well as break a geometrical sweat? Also, if you’re about to raise issues with the physics – don’t. Eventually the people in the universe of Greg Egan’s “Orthogonal” series figure out the topology of their cosmos.
Well, instead of effectively expanding a short story and diluting a few good ideas he just came up with more brilliant ones, built a world which wouldn’t have fit a much smaller book and wove in a moving epic story The consequences effect relation between the sexes, the structure If hard-core science fiction is your thing, this is the book for you. It is really cool that Egan’s alternative rules of physics make this plausible.
And for all he knew, his body was right. Then Egan assumes that one will understand all the puzzling science he wants to explore without the convenient sieving.
Jul 08, Andrea rated it it was amazing Shelves: The second tension is an impending apocalypse caused by two universes with different rules of physics colliding. The Clockwork Rocket is not unique in this issue: Now those readers who are fascinated by rotational physics, geometry and alternate equations for grrg the universe will undoubtedly be on board for the next two books in the Orthogonal series.
Now, I have a degree in physics, and this book simply made my head spin.
Retrieved 7 Sep It comprises three volumes:. Oct 11, Eduardo rated it did not like it Shelves: Yalda, the m I got a great deal of enjoyment out of reading this book – there were aliens with non-human physiology and cultural practices, and a well-thought-out alternate physics with enough similarity to real physics that I got insight into the real world from the discussions of the “rotational physics” in the book just as an English-speaker can get insight into English grammar by studying a related but different language like Germanbut more than that there were characters I really liked.
I am not sure so much of this needs to be in spoiler markup. Straight from the horse’s mouth!
Search SoC Search for: I have my suspicions but I want to see how this plays out. Egan takes the ancient fear that comets herald the end of the world and makes it true Jul 09, Ben rated it really liked it. The book’s angle on the issue is unique on account of the biology of non-anthropomorphic aliens. Egzn is excellent — but the infodumps required to bring the reader up to speed are rather intensive. This time the premise — that relativistic time dilation works the other way around — is worth well over a full book, and Egan does a marvelous job building a world and plot around it.
There is a plant which can prevent females from undergoing reproduction, or at least strongly reduce the probabilities. So for the travelers, the journey can last as long as it needs to.
Orthogoonal all 3 comments. A crash with an orthongonal star. The plot follows Yalda’s initial experience of education, her move to university, and on into theoretical physics and astronomical research, for roughly the first half of the book. At the start of the story, the occasional streaking light is seen in the night sky; over time, with more appearing, these streaks come to be called Hurtlers. This of course stems from the physics, but it also includes some unrelated principles. I will resist the temptation of giving examples.
Yalda is remarkable and the science is incredible, I highly recommend this one to science fiction lovers.
